Our Mission
The mission of the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library is to promote literacy, education, culture, and community in Hermosa Beach and the South Bay.
Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library (HBFoL) is a nonprofit corporation organized for charitable purposes under the federal Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law. Our charitable activities focus on enhancing community literacy, and include projects that promote reading and engagement with libraries, support for institutions that advance literary and cultural enrichment, with preference directed to the Hermosa Beach community and the greater South Bay region.
We raise funds through annual donations, corporate partnerships, grants, and the operation of community bookstores. Every dollar we raise strengthens our public library's ability to serve as a center for learning, connection, and opportunity.
Our History
1959 | Founding
On September 29, 1959, founding President Helen Tracy and a small group of dedicated residents gathered with a shared commitment: supporting the Hermosa Beach Library and promoting education and literacy in their growing beach town. We honor this team of visionary book-lovers and their dedication through our work today.
1981 | Incorporation
HBFoL officially incorporated as a California nonprofit in 1981. Today, we are guided by our Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws, with a strong commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to community needs.
Present
Over six decades, HBFoL has evolved from quarterly book sales to a year-round operation with three bookstores, growing book redistribution programs, and a network of Little Free Libraries. We have granted more than $750,000 to the Hermosa Beach Public Library and distributed thousands of books to readers throughout the South Bay.
