Clarence Bicknell Museum

Tucked away in the charming seaside town of Bordighera, Italy, the Clarence Bicknell Museum is a captivating library and collection of artifacts that offers a unique glimpse into the life and work of one of the Italian Riviera’s most important botanists and archaeologists. Situated in his personal residence, the library study of Clarence Bicknell (1842-1918) was opened to the public in 2009.

English-born Bicknell moved from England to Bordighera in the late 19th century, where he began his extensive work in botanical research and archaeology. His interests led him to explore and document the prehistoric rock carvings of the Vallee des Merveilles, as well as collect and classify numerous plant species native to the region, and the library collection reflects this fusion of nature, history, and literature.

Arguably the most striking and unique features of this museum are the seemingless endless stacks of books filled with hand-drawn illustrations and research findings of the rich biodiversity and prehistoric culture of the Italian Riviera. The museum continues Bicknell’s tradition of exploration by offering workshops and lectures on topics related to botany, archaeology, and local history. These programs are designed to enrich visitors’ understanding of the subjects that Bicknell was passionate about, and continue the legacy which can be seen throughout the library. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or simply curious about the fascinating stories of the Italian Riviera, this museum will captivate and inspire with its blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty.
