Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library Acquire New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians
In furtherance of the musical heritage of Hermosa Beach, The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library, the Patricia A. Gazin Fund and Myron Gazin have combined their resources to acquire the Second Edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. This 29 volume set , printed in 2001, replaces the 1954 version at the Hermosa Beach Library. The Grove Dictionary has been widely acclaimed as an indispensable resource and a classic reference. It contains over 29,000 articles and over 6,000 contributors from 98 countries. The New York Times said: "Grove remains the best single source of musical information in English. Given the degree to which it has branched into world music, pop, and contemporary analytical theory, it may now be the most comprehensive musical dictionary in any language." This incredible musical resource is now available to music scholars and musicians.
Patricia A. Gazin was the founder of the Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library. After her death in 2001, the Patricia A. Gazin Fund was established with donations from friends, family and local organizations. Proceeds from the March Friends of the Library Book sales each year are added to the Fund which has been used to acquire biographies, poetry, and special reference materials for the Hermosa Beach Library. This $2,500 donation was promoted by former Community Library Manager Linda Dickerson and FOL member and music scholsr Toni Empringham.
