BOOK SALE SPECIALS:
SHAPE UP:
I t’s already February! Make your New Year’s resolutions come true--browse and buy books on diet, exercise, sports, physical & mental fitness.
READ UP:
Improve your Jeopardy responses with biographies about presidents, military heroes, entrepreneurs, entertainers past and present, and literary lights.
TAKE A BREAK:
Table after table of alphabetically organized hardcover and paperback fiction await, all alphabetized by author’s last name. Recent titles (2007-09) have their own separate section, as do classics, drama, poetry, foreign languages, travel, etc.
CHILDREN’S CORNER:
Two special collections will delight everyone in the family. Disney’s Wonderful World of Knowledge (20 volumes, 1973) and The Sesame Street Treasury (15 volumes, 1983) will bring back memories for adults and provide hours of entertainment and education for preschoolers and their older siblings. The color illustrations are truly works of art, and each set, priced at a mere $5, is a bargain you mustn’t pass up. Many other fiction & nonfiction books are here as well, invitingly arranged by age level.
THE BOTTOM LINE:
Most books are still an incredibly affordable 25¢ for paperbacks, 50¢ for hardcovers. Our sales offer the best book bargains in the South Bay.

MONDAY MORNING BARD STREET BOOK SALES: Open hours are still 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. except for Holidays or the Monday before and after each book sale.
2009 ELECTION:
At the annual general meeting held on January 12, the following officers were elected:
President: Dorothy Yost
Vice President: Naoma Valdes
Secretary: Diane Craig
Treasurer: Carol Lawson
DOROTHY YOST is past president of the Hermosa Beach Woman’s Club and a former Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year. She taught mathematics at Redondo Union High for 30 years and has been involved in Kiwanis Club activities as well as Friends of the Library book sales. Her message: “As incoming President of the Friends of the Library, I wish to thank the members for entrusting me with this responsibility. The organization is already running so well, thanks to the previous president, Betty Ryan, and I intend to continue on the present path. Our volunteers who man the facility work hard keeping it stocked and organized. Thanks to all who continue to donate and purchase books.”
50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
The Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library will turn golden in September of 2009. Suggestions are welcome for ways to celebrate and commemorate this important anniversary date: please e-mail your ideas to books@hbfol.org or leave a note in the FOL suggestion box at the library or at 1309 Bard Street.
WHAT’S NEW AT THE LIBRARY?
Purchases with sale proceeds and membership dues include headphones for computer users, ink jet printer supplies, stamp pads for Storytime crafts, and live plants to enhance the environment. Also, FOL President Dorothy Yost presented winners of the children’s bookmark contest with Barnes & Noble gift cards (again, provided by book sale funds) at the January 27 City Council meeting. We applaud these talented youngsters: Nicolette Murray, Sofia Beck, Lily Glasman, Angeli Cabanban, Scott Meyer, Hannah Schreiner, Amanda Zendejas, Jocelyn Meza, and Casey White.
UPCOMING CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS on Friday afternoons at 3 p.m.:
---Doggone Musical (Feb. 20th--for younger kids)
---Adventures in Dog Sledding (March 20th--for all ages)
---Dinosaur Bones (April 3rd--elementary & older).
Families are always welcome.
INTERIM BOOK SALES: The shelves on both sides of the Pier Avenue entrance to the library are loaded with bargains and with volumes on these timely subjects. Stock changes frequently and includes large-format (or trade) paperbacks priced at 25¢, 50¢, and $1.
Member meeting on Wednesday, February 25, at 4pm at 1309 Bard Street. All members welcome. 2009 memberships are available by mail (go to form) or at the booksale. |
