INSIDE BARD STREET:
ECONOMICS 1309
If your trips to Borders and Barnes & Noble are becoming less frequent or nonexistent in these dollar-stretching times, 1309 Bard Street is the place for you. Many volumes on sale are in almost-perfect condition, have been read only once, and are priced at an
astoundingly low 25¢ for paperbacks and 50¢ for hardcover books (including 2006, 2007, and 2008 titles).
HOLIDAY & CHRISTMAS BOOKS
Whether you are looking for ideas to make special occasions more special, or for gifts to take to office parties and other holiday gatherings, you can’t go wrong by browsing through our stock before hitting the mall or the internet. We also have art books, dictionaries, and reference books to enrich your understanding of seasonal traditions.
THE VIETNAM EXPERIENCE
We still have 18 volumes from this outstanding Time-Life series, which is no longer available from the publisher. Individual titles go for as much as $9 apiece from most second-hand booksellers. If you are missing any of the original set of 25, bring a list and fill in your collection from our selection.
POLITICS, THE ECONOMY, BUDGETING, SAVING FOR RETIREMENT
Whatever you need to know, there is a book in our impeccably organized and clearly labeled warehouse to answer your needs.
MONDAY MORNING BARD STREET BOOK SALES: Open hours are still 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. except the Monday before each book sale or Holidays. Call 310-372-1902 to arrange for delivery of large book donations. |

PAYING IT FORWARD:
Hermosa Beach Friends of the Library is continually receiving large book donations, sometimes including multiple copies of popular titles. In the spirit of sharing the wealth, this organization has been donating extra titles to more than a dozen good causes, including Iraq war veterans at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Maryland and the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. Local donations have gone to the Women’s and Children’s shelter in San Pedro, American Martyrs’ mission at Camp Miller for boys 9 to 17 on probation, Sunrise Senior Center in Hermosa Beach, and Friends of the Library groups in Carson, Gardena, Hawthorne, and El Segundo. Be assured that we welcome your donations and that whatever books you bring in will benefit a good cause.
LIBRARY NEWS:
Library Manager Elmita Brown has recently purchased display bins, book easels, and signs with book sale funds. Also, on August 15th,Youth Services Librarian Carolyn Reed held a party hosted by the Friends of the Library to honor more than 50 young readers who successfully completed the reading game as part of the annual Summer Reading Program. Carolyn will be using funds from the upcoming book sale to buy headphones for the children’s computers to help make the
area more study-friendly after school.
Once again the Friends will be judging local entries for the annual “Read to Win” bookmark contest (deadline: October 31). Top winners
in each age category will continue to the County-wide level.
New employees behind the desk include staff members on loan from Lennox Library, which is undergoing renovation: Marcela Hernandez,
Isabel Moncayo, Maria Rivera, and Juan Carlos Romero.
Hermosa Library’s new pages are Natalie Inger and James Castillo. A familiar and very welcome “new” Library Aide is Anna Tattu, who
last worked at this library in 1997.
Member meeting on Wednesday, November 19th, at 4 p.m. at 1309 Bard Street. All members welcome. 2009 memberships are available by mail (go to form) or at the booksale. |
