INSIDE BARD STREET:
BROWSING HAS BECOME A BREEZE: The hardcover fiction, nonfiction, and biography sections have been rearranged. Aisles are wider and titles are easier to read. Best of all, prices are still the lowest in town: 25¢ for paperbacks, 50¢ for hardcover books  (including 2006 & 2007 titles) in great condition.
GOING GREEN: Check out the new section on ecology and the environment. What better way to save a tree--not to mention the planet--than by buying gently used books.
CHRISTMAS & OTHER HOLIDAY BOOKS: Don’t wait until November to start getting ready for the busiest season of the year. The best selection of books on crafts, cooking, and home decorations are available now in our warehouse.
MASTERWORKS OF ANIMAL ART:Speaking of holiday bargains, this limited edition folder of 9 prints suitable for framing would make a wonderful gift. Price: a mere $10 for the set.
COLLECTORS OF COLLECTIONS: Multiple titles in several well-known Time-Life series--The Vietnam Experience, The Third Reich, and World War Two--are yours for just 50¢ apiece. Or make an offer to take home an entire set..
BODICE-RIPPING IS ALIVE IN THE 21ST CENTURY: Our large selection of Romances goes back no farther than 2001, and all titles are only 10¢

MONDAY MORNING BARD STREET BOOK SALES: Open hours are still 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. except the Monday before each book sale or Holidays. Call 310-372-1902 to arrange for delivery of large book donations.

INSIDE THE LIBRARY: Supplies purchased recently from book sale funds include puzzles for the children’s area, storage boxes for program supplies, 100 protective magazine covers, a heavy-duty electric stapler, and two pairs of scissors for left-handers (in case either presidential candidate stops by). Also the DVD collection has been enhanced by 65 titles: Oscar winners, AFI classics, children’s films, and recent releases.

INTERIM BOOK SALES: The shelves on both sides of the Pier Avenue entrance to the library are loaded with bargains. Stock changes frequently and includes large-format (or trade) paperbacks priced at 25¢, 50¢, and $1.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM:
“Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library”
Youth Services Librarian Carolyn Reed has arranged for the remaining Friday afternoon programs, all beginning at 3 P.M., are sponsored by the FOL’s Evelyn Belasco Fund:
— AUGUST 1: Alligator Al & his Fabulous Reptiles
— AUGUST 8: “Free to Be Me”--Drumming with Sabine

“PAWS TO READ”:
Young readers practice their skills with Therapy Dogs as listeners every second Saturday at 10:30 A.M. For advance registration and more details, call 310-379-8475 or stop by the library to pick up a flyer.

FALL STORY TIME SIGN-UP: Registration, which is required for this extremely popular series, begins on Tuesday, September 9, and continues until groups are full. To register, visit the library or call 310-379-8475.

CLYDE WILSON (BILL) MALONE passed away on June 12. Bill and Charlotte Malone (d. 2006) were active and dedicated Friends of the Library members for many years and are responsible for the current glowing reputation and financial success of this organization and its book sales. Officially, Bill served as President of the HBFOL in 1979 and for nearly 40 years was its Treasurer. Unofficially he also served as membership secretary, newsletter editor, book transporter, and at any other position that needed filling. Bill was born in Redondo Beach; he attended Redondo Union High, the University of Redlands, and USC. After passing the Bar, he practiced law in Torrance and kept his license current until this year. He was well known and well liked in the community, and he brought integrity and class to everything he did. Our condolences go to his son, Tim, his daughter, Terry Gilstrap, and their families.
