• OUTSTANDING_SELECTION_OF_HOLIDAY_SEASON_SPECIALS — Thanks to an extremely large and valuable donation from seven storage units, we have brand new books in mint condition for your pre-holiday shopping. Especially notable: Martha Stewart crafts and cookbooks, and also other new cookbooks. Many books on North American Indians are another part of this enormous windfall.

• BACK_TO_SCHOOL — Show up early and take advantage. Materials for teachers and parents are organized by grade level and include books, workbooks, and flash cards. We have an abundance of math and language arts material, and many other subjects as well. Catch up on what you missed the first time around! Do your kids’ homework in one hour instead of three or four!

• AND,_BACK_TO_BUSINESS — Do you understand what your accountant is talking about? Have you been trying to follow the stock market via the Wall Street Journal? Is the vocabulary of your realtor a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma? Browse the extensive offerings in our Business and Finance section and chances are you’ll find the books you need to answer a lot of your questions.

• FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSICS — Why not buy a bagful of French novels and brush up your conversation and reading skills as you fly to your next weekend in Paris? Choose from fiction and nonfiction in other languages too--and take home a grammar and vocabulary text just in case you’ve forgotten more than you realized.

• MAPS FOR YACHTSMEN & LANDLUBBERS — Road maps, navigation charts--get where you’re going at bargain prices. You can take home the 5th edition of the Yachtsman’s Southern California Chart Book for less than the cost of a gallon of gas.

• WHERE_DOES_THE_MONEY_GO? — Proceeds from book sales and membership dues pay for important extras at the Hermosa Beach Library. A few of the recent examples: The rental collection of brand-new DVDs now numbers 70. Titles are added each week and rent for $1 a day. Proceeds go toward more new DVDs. Extra copies of best-sellers are purchased with Friends of the Library funds donated in memory of Charlotte Malone. The Children’s Section has a complete set of Newbery and Caldecott Medal winners thanks to the FOL’s Evelyn Belasco Fund. The 2007 additions are "The Higher Power of Lucky" by Susan Patron and "Flotsam" by David Wiesner. This fund also pays for replacing damaged or missing titles in the collection. Housekeeping supplies not covered by County budget restrictions include Avery labels for magazines and Q-tips for cleaning the bar code reader. Every little bit helps!

• ANY_SUGGESTIONS? — The FOL will be discontinuing the Wednesday evening preview sales beginning in 2008. What other membership benefits would you like to suggest?
